Super Clone Watch Straps: Rubber, NATO, Leather — Which to Choose

September 11, 2026 · 5 min read

The bracelet or strap a watch ships with is not necessarily the best configuration for every context. Swapping straps is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the versatility of a super clone watch, and many collectors consider strap swapping as much a part of the hobby as the watch itself. This guide covers the main strap categories, what they are best suited for, and which super clone references benefit most from a strap change.

Why Strap Swapping Matters

A Rolex Submariner on its steel Oyster bracelet reads as a serious sport watch. The same watch on a tan leather strap reads as a vintage-inspired dress watch. The same watch on a black NATO reads as an active-lifestyle casual piece. The case does not change. The lug width does not change. The watch's entire character changes with the strap.

For super clone owners, this is especially practical because the lug widths of the most popular references match standard aftermarket strap widths:

  • Most Rolex sport watches: 20mm
  • Panerai Luminor: 26mm
  • Hublot Big Bang 42mm: 45mm (proprietary, Hublot-compatible straps needed)
  • Omega Seamaster 300M: 20mm
  • Cartier Santos Large: 21mm (or 20mm on the non-integrated strap version)

Steel Bracelets: When to Keep the Original

The steel Oyster bracelet on the Submariner or GMT-Master II is the most versatile configuration for most wearers. It works in casual, professional, and social contexts without adjustment. The Glidelock extension clasp allows 5mm of length adjustment without tools, accommodating sleeve thickness variation throughout the year.

Keep the steel bracelet if:

  • You wear the watch in contexts that range from office to outdoor activities
  • You prefer a unified metal aesthetic
  • You want maximum water resistance (leather straps should not be submerged regularly)
  • The bracelet fits comfortably without modification

Consider a strap swap if:

  • The bracelet feels heavy or uncomfortable after extended wear
  • You want a different aesthetic for specific occasions
  • The bracelet requires sizing and you want to avoid bracelet link removal
  • You wear the watch year-round and want summer and winter configurations

NATO Straps: The Casual-Utility Choice

The NATO strap is a single-piece nylon or polyester strap that passes through the watch lugs and under the spring bars, creating a configuration where the watch cannot fall off even if a spring bar fails. It was developed for military use and remains the most practical strap for high-activity wear.

NATOs work exceptionally well on diving watches — the Submariner, Seamaster, and GMT-Master II all look at home on a quality NATO. The Speedmaster Moonwatch on a grey NATO strap is one of the most iconic watch configurations in the collector world, matching the NASA-issue configuration from the Apollo era.

**Width**: Most NATOs come in 18mm, 20mm, and 22mm. For the Submariner and most Rolex sport watches, 20mm is the correct width.

**What to spend**: Quality NATOs from brands like Hodinkee, Everest, or Hirsch run $20 to $60. A good NATO strap changes a watch's entire character for less than the cost of a dinner. Generic nylon NATOs from Amazon work adequately but have lower-quality hardware and less comfortable textures.

**Color pairings**:

For the Submariner (black dial, black bezel): Grey NATO (authentic Speedmaster-reference color that also works well with a Sub), dark green military NATO, two-tone black-grey.

For the GMT Batman (black-blue bezel): NATO with blue stripe or solid dark blue.

For the Seamaster blue: Matching blue NATO or grey NATO.

Super Clone Watch Straps: Rubber, NATO, Leather — Which to Choose

Rubber Straps: Sport and Water Activity

Rubber straps are the correct choice for frequent water exposure, high-heat environments, or active sports use. They do not absorb water, dry quickly, and are easier to clean than leather. The primary downside is that rubber feels different on the wrist than steel or leather — some people prefer it, others find it less comfortable under a shirt cuff.

Dedicated rubber strap brands for specific references:

**Everest Bands**: Produces high-quality rubber straps specifically designed for Rolex cases, with correctly proportioned end pieces that fit the Submariner and GMT lug openings precisely.

**Rubber B**: The premium option. More expensive than Everest but uses higher-grade vulcanized rubber and more detailed construction.

For the Seamaster and Hublot Big Bang, rubber straps are the natural pairing because both watches are designed around rubber strap aesthetics.

Leather Straps: Dress and Semi-Formal

Leather straps are appropriate for watches worn primarily in professional or social contexts where a metal bracelet reads as too sporty. They are not appropriate for regular water exposure — leather absorbs water, weakens over time when wet, and develops odor if worn in sweat-heavy conditions regularly.

**Alligator/crocodile leather**: The premium choice for dress applications. Deeply textured and distinctive. Appropriate for Datejust, Cartier Santos, and Omega Constellation. $40 to $200+ depending on quality.

**Calf leather**: The most versatile leather strap type. Works across semi-formal and casual contexts. Italian calf leather from brands like Hirsch or Watchbandit ($25 to $60) is the most practical choice.

**Quick-release mechanisms**: Many aftermarket leather straps come with quick-release spring bars, allowing strap swaps without tools in seconds. Worth the minor additional cost for regular strap swappers.

FKM Rubber / Tropical Straps

FKM (fluoroelastomer) is a high-performance synthetic rubber used in Rolex's Oysterflex and Omega's rubber straps on premium references. It is more durable, more heat-resistant, and less prone to color fading than standard rubber. Several aftermarket strap brands offer FKM straps for popular lug widths.

The "tropical" strap refers to a vintage-style rubber strap with a slightly faded, matte appearance that references tropical weather-aged original straps from 1960s and 1970s sport watches. On vintage-style super clones (Explorer II, Submariner no-date), a tropical strap creates a compelling vintage-sport aesthetic.

The Perlon Strap: Underrated Summer Option

The Perlon strap is a mesh-woven nylon strap that breathes exceptionally well and integrates a ladder adjustment mechanism instead of fixed holes — meaning it fits any wrist size without needing to punch new holes. It is essentially impossible to have a Perlon strap that is the wrong size.

Perlon straps work best on watches with a more restrained aesthetic: the Datejust, Omega Constellation, IWC Pilot, and Explorer references all wear well on Perlon. On diving watches with heavy lug widths, the Perlon can look undersized.

Price: $15 to $35. The best value strap type for the price paid.

Spring Bar Tool: The Essential Accessory

If you plan to swap straps more than once, you need a spring bar tool. This is a two-ended tool ($10 to $25) with a forked end for compressing spring bars and a pointed end for pushing them into lug holes. Basic strap swaps with a quality spring bar tool take 60 seconds once you have done it twice.

Without a spring bar tool, strap swapping requires a thin implement that can damage the watch lugs or the lug opening finish over time.
